Anansi Titles
Anansi stories have been popular among adults and children for centuries. Originally brought over to the Caribbean from West African slaves, the stories carry many universal messages and have been reproduced in countless books for children. The focus of these stories is on Anansi, a part-human, part-spider that is known for his tricky, cunning ways.
There are many different adaptations of the Anansi folktale; some versions depict Anansi as the creator of the sun, moon, and stars. Other versions explain how Anansi tried to hoard the entire world's wisdom in a calabash, but eventually released it. However, most Anansi folklore has a story about how Anansi became The King of All Stories by tricking a jaguar, hornets, and a fairy.
The Anansi character is far from perfect, which perhaps makes him more popular with children and adults. Although he often acts selfishly or egotistically, he has an irresistibility that endears him to readers' hearts.
One World Book Co. has an extensive collection of Anansi titles that are suitable for adults and children.
